Continuous Professional Development in Education Matters

Continuous Professional Development in Education Matters

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”  Benjamin Franklin

For FRTC, the quality of our education in the BANKSETA, INSETA and QCTO programmes is linked directly to the economic success of the graduate and South Africa, which translates into tax revenues, investments, businesses, employment, real estate values and community development. Therefore, as an educational institution, continuous professional development in education matters is conducted to ensure that our education system is collectively managed and leads with precision by management,
academics and support staff.

FRTC believes that continuous learning through professional development helps our team do their jobs more effectively, improve their career goals, encourage dedication, increase satisfaction, and professionalism that meaningfully helps our learners’ to improve their learning and performance in the work environment.

Why Professional Development Matters in Teaching and Learning at FRTC?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRODUCES THREE PRIORITY RESULTS FOR FRTC EDUCATORS:
a) They are given an opportunity to empower themselves with new knowledge/ techniques/ skills for
example, individual staff development was conducted with each educator on how to compile and maintain their teaching and learning portfolio of evidence;
b) They use their new knowledge/ techniques/ skills to progress in their teaching and leadership approach, to successfully motivate student learning and achievement, for example, each educator
received personal development on how to prepare a lesson plan that accommodates differentiated learning;
c) And the results of professional development are assessed through surveys, self-evaluations, performance appraisals, observations, video recordings, and interviews, for example, each educator is in the process of conducting a teaching and learning self-evaluation.

The Benefits of implementing, monitoring and evaluating professional development

Continuous Professional development has produced the following evidence to FRTC:
a) Educators learnt to use necessary methods to effectively address student learning problems, for example, to reinforce differentiated teaching and learning, educators provide individual lessons to students via WhatsApp or online;
b) The appropriate support is provided to educators to apply their instruction of the knowledge/ techniques/ skills that they learnt, for example, improved learning material is developed by experts and provides the educators with more options on how to engage the learners during the teaching and learning process, that is aligned to the relevant industries;
c) Educators’ application of what they learnt has enabled them to improve their instruction and to more effectively address student learning problems, for example, at-risk learners are identified during the early stages of teaching and learning;
d) And student learning and achievement has increased substantially as a result of educators’ applying their new knowledge/ techniques/ skills they have learnt, for example, in all our BANKSETA, INSETA and QCTO programmes, FRTCs recorded pass rate is more than 95% except for the New Insurance Agent: Insurance Underwriter qualification that was rolled out in 2019, that requires a 70% pass mark.

Change is constant and knowledge changes every second and the fundamental essence of professional development is a mode to gain new knowledge/ techniques/ skills to make a more meaningful contribution to the livelihoods of all role players involved.
